Online or On-Campus Study? Pros and Cons of Each

There are several options to choose from if you wish to study for a degree. The choice of whether to take the traditional route and follow a campus-based study program or to opt for the increasingly popular online study route may be influenced by many factors, not least your personal circumstances.

We want to show you the benefits of each option, and why you may want to consider your choice carefully. Let’s start by talking about the cost element.

How Much Does a Degree Cost?

A four-year bachelor's degree can cost as much as $30,000. That is assuming you choose to go the bricks-and-mortar university route. Look at this list of areas of expense when going to university:

-          Rental of home plus all associated bills

-          Tuition and other fees

-          Travel costs

-          Food and other essentials

That’s just a few of the expenses you will have to consider. Now let’s balance those with some positives associated with studying at university:

-          Tutors on hand to provide assistance

-          Firm timings for classes

-          The social aspect of the university

-          Personal development

The on-campus option has attractions, especially for high school graduates, but what if you are at work, or have a family that demands a lot of your time? Next, we will look at the benefits and drawbacks of online study programs.

Why Study Online for a Degree?

The online route is popular with people who cannot physically move home to study for a degree. If this applies to you, here are the benefits of online study:

-          Convenience of studying in your own time

-          No travel or additional expenses

-          Possibly cheaper fees

However, there are some downsides to studying at home. Unless you set aside a space that is exclusively for study, and do not allow interruptions, you may find you fall behind. Furthermore, some students prefer the face to face meetings with tutors rather than a virtual ones.

So, each option has its merits, now we need to look at how you can keep the costs to a minimum.

Is Financial Aid Available for Degree Students?

Financial aid for both online and campus-based study paths is available. If you are a high school graduate, you should look at the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) route. This is a limited pot that students can apply for to help with tuition fees, and you should get an application in as early as possible.

There may be state grants available, as well as scholarships, so investigate these thoroughly. If you are at work and aiming to improve your qualifications and skills, your employer may have a finance scheme available. We recommend you talk to your HR department in the first instance.

The fact remains that the choice is entirely up to the individual. Have a closer look at the two options and find opinions from students who have followed each route, and you will b able to make your decision.
